Xizi Wang, Conductor
Xizi Wang started playing the piano at the age of five. In 2003 she began to study at the Music High School Shanghai, then percussion in 2006, while taking conducting lessons at the same time. In 2011 she moved to the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied percussion, graduating in 2018, and also continued her studies in conducting. During and after her studies she achieved various successes at competitions: Ludwig Albert Talent Prize at the Universal Marimba Competition (Belgium, 2013), First Prize at the 11th PAS International Percussion Competition in Marimba (Italy, 2013), semi-finals of the TROMP Percussion Competition (Netherlands, 2016), First Prize at the 3rd International Timpani Competition in Lyon (France, 2021). She gained experience with orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, and won Academy scholarships with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (2017) and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra (2018). She has played solo concerts with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and the Webern Ensemble Vienna, among others. In 2023 she will be heard with the Neue Lausitzer Philharmonie. As a conductor she has worked with orchestras such as the Orchesterverein der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde Wien and the Ace Ensemble. Since 2020 she has been principal timpanist at the Gerhard Hauptmann Theatre in Görlitz. Xizi Wang is well-versed in the field of contemporary music. This led to regular participation at the Lucerne Festival as a timpanist/percussionist, a multi-year collaboration as a conductor with the Studio Dan Vienna, and now an Academy scholarship at the Ensemble Modern in Frankfurt.
