Po-Chien Liu, Composer
The Taiwanese composer Po-Chien Liu began studying composition at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Germany in 2017. There, he studied with Günter Steinke, Michael Edwards (electronic music composition) and Dietrich Hahne (visualization of composition). Po-Chien Liu’s focus is on the aesthetics of sound in Asian thought and the exploration of the interface between noise sound and music. His compositions are marked by a unique combination of traditional Asian sounds with modern composition techniques. His works have won several awards, including the first prize at the 2023 Acht Brücken International Composition Competition, the 2022 Folkwang Composition Prize and further awards from the Asian Composers League Conference and Festival and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra. He received a scholarship of the Taiwan National Performing Arts Foundation for musical composition in 2020 and 2021. His compositions have been performed around the world, including at the Asian Composers League Festival on the Philippines (2015), in Vietnam (2016) and in Taiwan (2014, 2017, 2018), at the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival (ISCM) , the Viola Modern Festival, by the Ensemble Folkwang Modern, Ensemble Érma, Ensemble Little Giant, at the Now Festival, by the Taiwan Chinese Orchestra and the National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra.
